What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a lifestyle designed just for you.

Ayurveda is an individualized system of holistic health. It is often called yoga’s sister science. Ayurvedic health is concerned with caring for the body through food choices, appropriate sleep and exercise, and creating a daily routine incorporating hygiene and self-care.

The Ayurvedic view categorizes energy into three different types – pitta, kapha and vata. We all contain some combination of the three energy types, called doshas. The doshas each have specific roles to play within the body, and we each have our own unique balance of the three. This balance can be thrown off by life changes, neglecting our health or even the time of year.

In Ayurveda, the building blocks of the world are the five elements: ether (space), air, fire, earth and water. Each dosha is characterized by a combination of two of these elements.

Vata is the energy of movement, and is characterized by ether and air.

Pitta is the energy of transformation, and is characterized by fire and water.

Kapha is the energy of growth, and is characterized by earth and water.

When one’s unique dosha combination is imbalanced, this can lead to health challenges and tendencies toward disease. Discovering your dosha, and learning to identify imbalances and correct them can reestablish equilibrium in the body.
